Best class for a n00b to play

For a total n00b, human fighter is the easiest. However, if you want someone to really be able to get into the game and get excited you may have to take a different approach. For instance if they just want to bash things, stick with the human fighter. If they want to do some interesting and unique things and are kind of a thinker, give them sorcerer or maybe even a bard.

I have to disagree slightly with this assesment on the fighter

If the DM makes the charcter a fighteris good but all those feats can be a bit daunting at higher level. I suggest a Human Barbarian for a starter. Suggest that the new guy make him a Viking/Conan type and most player will grok it immeditely

If they really want to play a spells caster (say the do a lot of MMORPG) I agree with you go with a Human or Elf Sorcerer. There are a lot less options than Wizard true but a Sorcerer is easy to play

I think that the best class for someone new to the game to play is fighter. However, I would allow them to play any class they wanted to. I don't like limiting people based upon their experience with the game.

i think a fighting class (brb, ftr, pal, rng) is always better for noobs then a casting class. race shouldn't be a broblem, i would let them choose whatever race they want. i've learned that you should never let a new player make his own character (what the hell are all these numbers?), ask them the following questions and make the character for them:
-what race?
-magic, ranged or melee?
also if you go through every stage of character creation with them it'll take a lot of time and they'll get bored and never show up for the game again. i know that from expirience, i lost at least 4 players because i thought they need to know a bit about the rules and stuff. no, first have fun then learn the rules and stuff because if the first session is boring they won't show up again.

I find that Fighter is the easiest class for most folks to wrap their head around at the beginning. Every other class has "fiddly bits" (rage, spells, etc.), while the Fighter ... well ... fights.

Sure, some of the feats might complicate things, but not that much, especially at low levels.

I would think it would depend on who the new person is (their experience with similar game forms, etc.) and the goals of the group and the player. Does the player really want to know the ins and outs of the system? Does the player just want to play for social reasons or to have something to kill time?

It might be helpful to have the more experienced players help the new player create a character and help put the new player's character concept into game mechanics.

I actually think Sorcerers are one of the easiest classes for new players. They have few skills, don't really get into feats and the combat rules much, and have a small spell selection and no preparation.

Sorcerer, fighter, or ranger.

The reason I tack on the ranger is that it's just a nifty class, without too much in the way of fiddly bits you have to think about terribly often, but enough that it's got all sorts of things to do. Plus, you get to be Aragorn or Legolas, which a newbie can relate to fairly easily.
