Best Class for a solo player campaign

Dungeon - Cleric the have the spells, healing, fighting and flexibility to survive. Monk and Bard making a close second for about the same reasons.

I also thought that the cleric would be the best choice. But Alas...

Every player went through the same dungeon as a solo adventure before we could join up. I had the cleric, and I was the only one to die (vs a rogue, a wizard and a monk).

I'm backing Cleric, for all of the reasons you stated.

In addition, he can function as a Diplomat, same as a Rogue (though without enough skill points to get all those auxiliary skills).

A cleric working as a Church Inquisitor would be PERFECT (a la the movie The Name of the Rose). A Church Inquisitor would function in cities, in rural areas, in rescues, etc. The right combo of magic and melee firepower to make a difference.

HOWEVER, for the love of all that's clerical, keep the CR's of fights 1 to 2 levels BELOW the level of the cleric. Otherwise, it's cleric flambee.

Actually the cleric is a bad choice imho... not enough plotchoices.

The movie The name of the rose is an even worse example cuz the main characters are probably not members of the cleric class :D

I'd rather see Sean Connery as an old fighter heading for knowledge expert IIRC.

At the risk of being cliche, the bard is probably the best choice.

His social skills are extremely good, probably the best in the game (only rivalled by a pure social rogue).
His healing magic is solid enough to cope in a single player campaign.
Access to enchantment and illusion spells can deal with a myriad of problems (including tank fighter opponents).
Stealth skills are good, so scouting is a viable option (with a cleric, this is a clear no-no).
AC is respectable, especially with buffs.
Offensive capability is a bit on the weak side, but in a solo campaign, survivability is paramount!

The only glaring problems are your weak Fort saves and that you are hampered against undead/constructs...so long as it's not a necromantic dungeon hack, you'll probably be okay.

Easy, rogue. ... By far the most self sufficient class IMHO

Yeah, until he dies alone in the wilderness from battle, starvation, dehydration, failed FORT or WILL roll, and no direction or guidance. ;)

Take the magic domain cleric. I did. He rocks. :D

My first thought was a wizard/rogue, or wizard/fighter. I would think flexibility would be pretty good. Given a little time you can prepare for just about anything. It being a solo game you probably have more control over the pace of things and exactly what you do and what challenges you decide to take on than in a party where you have to contend with the oppinions of others.

No love for my Clerical homies in this thread, I'm tellin' ya! :)

I was thinking along the lines of the movie's concept, not identically recreating it. The concept of a Church Inquisitor naturally lends itself to putting yourself in countless roleplaying situations that cannot be resolved by force of arms, as well as situations where detection magics and defensive spells are supremely important.

Imagine having to root out a mystery within an active monastery's walls, using all of the clerical magics available to you and muscle power if necessary...

Then carry the concept to recovering stolen relics for your church, counciling a noble who has recently left the faith (and finding out he is possessed), having to gather the facts and adjudicate a legal dispute, etc.

In addition to problems that are run across just in travelling to your next assignment... village being threatened by an ogre, thorp just ran out of drinking water, and the well they are digging uncovered an undead monster, etc.

The possibilities are wide open for such a scenario.
