Best class/role for solo play

I think that any class can solo but you have to try harder when you build with certain classes.
Most Difficult * Wizards will likely need to take either Toughness, Armor or both, simply because they've designed to be soft. However, Wizards have a basic attack that Slows until the end of their next turn giving them extra time to blast the opposition.
Least Difficult * Paladins are a no-brainer. Armor, shields, high hp, Lay on Hands, and Healing Attacks means they don't have to really change their build. Overall you'd just not choose "marking" powers over damage or healing. No reason to tank for yourself.

My first vote goes to Defender, too. But maybe a ranged character (Striker or Controller) with stealth can also work.

Both depends on the expected encounter setups. Defenders shine in melee. Striker or Controller work best if they have the maneuverability to escape their enemies and can strike from hiding or cover. (And in that case, enemy melee fighter are nice targets).

Come to think of it. When wizards start out, at lower levels, they'll have a more difficult time because they have less abilities. But at higher levels they'll have more "Controller Options" that could really make life easier for the solo gig. At 1st level a Wizard will suffer the most because they have few hitpoints and (though not technically) fewer options. Since so much behind the Controller class depends on altering your enemy's behavior, Wizards really need more options.

I say that because a Wizard has to "Make Terrain" or "Move Opponents" etc. Not everything works well in the same situation. Having more powers available makes the job easier for a Controller. Seeing a preview of the higher lvl powers tends to confirm this. Being able to push a group of monsters into a wall then seal them behind a Wall of Ice will be a staple at 15th level, but you need two powers to do it.

I think that Wizards will have a tougher time at lower levels.

a pally who multiclasses into wizard for controller aspects could just go and fight through everything.

a ranger who multi's into rogue could sneak/fight thru everything.
