Best history book on swords, axes, maces etc ?

There was a book similar to the Jane's Ship series just entitled 'Weapons' that literally stared with the club and worked up to armor (tanks not the stuff you wear). I have looked for that book for ages to no avail. If 13 yo Thunderfoot were still in HS he'd check it out of the library for you.

Do you have the year?

You can request it from Jane's itself or have them do a catalogue search.

Many of their books are titles "Weapons," but then also have a subtitle (such as Infantry, or Infantry weapons...etc).

The closest I could find was Jane's Unconventional Weapons which covers everything from like clubs and knives to IED's, military weapons, conventional weapons, lasers, etc.

You could also look under the more general Jane's series called Jane's Weapon Systems which were published for many decades each year (so many different versions/editions of it). They also can cover a widespread of various weapons.

I don't believe Jane's actually published it, it's ust the closest thing I could equate to. In depth amd detailed. Don't have a publishing year, sri. That's been almost 40 years ago. Wow I'm getting old.

Some of the Ospreys - particularly the ones in the Weapon and Warrior series - are readable and reasonably accurate, as well as easy to get hold of. The Warrior series discusses the equipment of the type of soldier they're about; the Weapon series is more specialised on one particular weapon (there are ones on the crossbow, longbow, medieval longsword, and so on) and discuss the history of the weapon and techniques for using it as well as talking about design.

Well, that doesn't make it easy. Based on your description, this is probably my closest guess at which book you may have looked at or read 40 years ago. It was fairly popular several decades ago, and has the appropriate moniker. Of course, it's a needle in a haystack type guess...but perhaps.

Nope, this was more encyclopedia vice picture book. I'm still looking. I wish luck in your search though.

Possibly this? Although dating from 2008 it's possibly too recent, but some of the DK books are new versions of ones from a publisher they took over.
That's definitely closer but considering it wasn't released until 2008. It isn't that one. But THAT is much closer to the content and style.
