Best level to fight the Tarrasque

You're right.

In all honesty, I'd be willing to bet my gaming books that Godzilla was the inspiration for Tarrasque, at least to some degree. I would also be willing to bet that Tarrasque was indeed always intended to be an indestructable force such as Godzilla.

If they were in a cave system ... how could the party ever get high enough to stay away from the tarrasque ?

A jump with speed 150 once a minute should be able to snatch everything ... and just banging your head against the wall to collapse the caves would work just fine for the tarrasque.

Ghostform works a treat. Go through the cavern and pop in and out willy-nilly (if you have a Clairvoyance in the cavern, so much the better).

Agreed. I much prefer the pre-errata Tarrasque. It's a LOT more fun if you can only kill it by drowning or asphyxiating it.

Or starving it! Maybe surrounding it with permanents walls of force.

Or with a fake cow full of sovereing glue. Try to eat with your jaws glued.
