Best level to play?

If I absolutely had to keep one level for an entire lifetime?

2.

Because life sucks and then you die, and while you may be heartier than the common ilk of the world, you aren't the strongest, and you still have a decent fear of mortality.

I'd probably go with 8th to give the primary casters access to 4th level spells, which allows for plenty of fun effects without the headaches some of the 5th+ spells introduce.

IMO the 'sweet-spot' for D&D is 5th-10th level. Strong enough to fill the heroic-fantasy roles without quite reaching comic-book superhero-ness.

My condolences for the DMs you had to play with.
Nah, I like these levels too.

The poll we had a month ago showed that around 8th level (my favorite as well) most people enjoy to play.

It's not about low levels being nice, but about his DM being unable to run a fun game in higher levels. I know it works, I've played in games like that - one lasted till level 30 and was the best game I ever played in, and it got better all the time, not worse.
