Best location in the Realms

I tend to think in more "eipc scale" terms, so the campaign in my head right now starts in Waterdeep and crosses all the way into Thay.

For a completely political campaign, I'd suggest Waterdeep, since it's large enough to include many many factions. Wilderness settings like the eastern Realms and the desert areas make for good trek-oriented campaigns. Cormyr and the Dale-lands, being populated for a while and with a lot of history behind them, offer a nice blend of politics and adventure, with dungeons able to be sprinkled liberally throughout.

I ran a 2E campaign based in Cormyr. It went very well. A big part of it was an alliance between Cormyr and Evermeet.

I am currently running a campaign set in Sembia. I have further developed the Cormyrian and Elven alliance.

Details please if you don't mind sharing. What type of alliance between Cormyr and Evermeet and how did you develop it?

My personal favorite is the silver marches area, for three reasons:

1) Silverymoon is a beautiful city of culture and learning for learning's sake. It is "little Cormanthor" in feel and tone.

2) It is in the middle of a hostile area; just to the north is the spine of the world, and home to untold horrors, orc hordes in the thousands, etc.

3) The Silver marches is home to some of the most famous dungeons on the continent, and is an area strewn with ruins of many long-lost kingdoms, not the least of which is Netheril, in the form of outposts and holdings.

It's the focus of a "advance civilization into the wilderness" theme that I enjoy.

My personal favorites are:

1) Waterdeep / Silver Marches: This is my choice for an urban oriented campaign. Based out of the urban sprawl of Waterdeep, allowing for the seedy underside of Skullport, Naval Adventures, as well as great excusions in the Silver Marches.

2) Rasheman: For a more wilderness and epic feel game I like Rasheman. I enjoy the history and the ambiance of the area, especially the play between the Barbarians and the Witches. Aglarond and Thay add in a nice rounding out of possibilities for adventures and intrigue.

I am currently running a game in the Dalelands / Cormyr area and its going quite well.

I also really like the Vilhon Reach, Old Empires and the Dragon Coast.

Cheers,

Since I'm a DM who like having freedom of creativity I avoid running long campaigns in places everyone knows a lot about. Most of my players appreciate it a lot, since that way none of them has some kind of "advantage". Of course, all of them know how to seperate player knowledge from character knowledge, but I think it works best, so surprise both, player AND character with a great campaign.

For this reason, I ran a pretty long campaign (almost 2 years in real time, playing every two weeks on a regular basis) in the region of Turmish, with short trips to Sembia and the astral plane (and greater events in Chondath and Sespech having some influence on the campaign).

I also played a short series of adventures in Chessenta und right now, I run a campaign in Aglarond which will probably lead to some trips to Thay and maybe even Underdark.

Why not the Moon Sea? A campaign based there has a stunning number of ports o' call! It coud be straight up Sembia one minute, then some crazy Witch Queen action in Aglorand the next. I think the Moonsea area definitly blends the FR setting into an easily navigated whole. It's not for DMs that want to establish minuteae and have a stable setting, but a PC base aboard a ship on the Moonsea would offer a wonderfully varied playing field.
