Best martial controller ideas?

A Ninja style martial controller is another possibility. You have an arsenal of unusual weapons like caltrops and ball bearings to create zones, pepper or poison filled egg grenades to do blasts or bursts. Poison darts or shiruken inflict status effects. Probably be something like a controller/striker when finally finished.

But yeah an FFT style Dragoon would be a blast. Some other tactical games like the Disgaea also feature martial characters that make area attacks with weapons like spears or even swords.

And of course you can always blur the martial/magic line ala the Book of 9 swords. :D

I think the seeker is pretty close to a martial controller. All the effects can be reflavored as alchemical mixtures placed in packets and tied to the arrows.

Two words right back atcha: Obsidian Steed!

;)

Oh, don't get me wrong; I'd LOVE a cavalier-style controller who tramples, clobbers, and overruns his foes. It just doesn't fit the 4e paragrim of "all classes work equally well at all times". I can't see building a class around a magical item (and at that point, is still a "martial" PC?)

As a prestige cla... wait. We got rid of those. As a paragon path (I guess) youc could make a fighter or paladin a good "controller" buy giving him a kickass mount. Seems the only way to make a usable "rider" class.

Y'know, I think that boat sailed when WotC created the Beastmaster ranger and then the Vadalis Griffonmaster paragon path. That is clearly a mounted build.

When 4e first came out I designed an "Auxiliary" class (think hoplites, skirmishers, etc). Auxiliaries are masters of both ranged and thrown weapons and use their proficiency in these weapons to take advantage of the tactical openings which present themselves in the heat of battle.

It worked pretty well, but when I sent it off to WotC they didn't respond back (perhaps the Seeker was one of the reasons why)... I guess I should shop it around to third party publishers since WotC still hasn't put one together and it seems to be a niche that hasn't been filled yet.

Yeah, two thumbs up for jaldaen's Auxiliary. :)

I had an idea a while back which, after coming up with class features and first level powers, was begging to be a martial controller. I called it the "Inquisitive". Here's the elevator pitch...

Inquisitive
“I am the ultimate sleuth – Sherlock with a sword.”

Inspiration: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing, Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski, and Gregoire de Fronsac from Brotherhood of the Wolf

Nifty Trick: create/augment/bypass difficult terrain

New Types of Power: If X then Y, interact with monster knowledge check, swappable “monstrous” daily powers, create line of sight/effect

Coherent Theme: Unstoppable investigator of natural and supernatural

Limit: Once I’m set on a course of action it’s hard for me to turn back or adapt

Baisically a monk or fighter with a ton of combat expertise stuff. In 3.5 I had a monk that could trip people by provoking an atttack of opportunity. All he had you do was run past you. :p pretty fun. and annoying to the DM. at least a while.:D
