WIS doesn't just add to rider effects, it also adds to the key skills a ranger's party relies upon him to deliver: Nature & Perception. Oh, and it gets you some WILL.

A 'balanced' Ranger I'd have certainly gone with 1/2 Orc or Elf, and as an archer-ranger the Elf wins hands-down. The Elf is really the perfect race for ranger, as long as it's not a dedicated TWF ranger.

I agree. And I was honestly disappointed that the TWF won the other vote as I feel the synergies that the elf has with the archer-ranger class-build are simply awesome.

But then, if I got what I wanted, there'd be a human in there as well and no gnomes, devas or shifters :)

Well, there haven't been any posts to the thread and only a few new votes for two days. I'll give it one more day and then call it.

Quick question: the current party is Dwarf Guardian Fighter, Deva Control Wizard, Eladrin Tactical Warlord, and (tentatively) Half-Orc TWF Ranger?

Looks like. I made up an eladrin tactical warlord as per the discussion in that thread and I have to say I wasn't really impressed. I wouldn't enjoy playing such a character and am surprised it won.

I'd rather have an Eladrin Resourceful Warlord with a Tratnyr & Shield and an Eladrin Chainmail.

This is a really close call for me. They both have good offensive and defensive options. They both have a good number of different options and paths they can go. Interesting weapon choices and power choices exist for both.

For the Half-orc I can see starting with str 18, con 12, dex 18, int 8, wis 12, cha 10, and go for stormwarden with bastard swords. Or I can see str 18, con 14, dex 16, int 8, wis 13, cha 10 and go with a pair of waraxes, and do battle awareness/Kensei.

Shifter obviously makes a great pit fighter with a wisdom focus. But another option is to balance it out for something like str 18, con 13, dex 14, int 8, wis 16, cha 10. This would allow going up to Scale, getting specialization, and with TWF, TWD, you can have respectable defense on top of all the other longtooth shifter goodnes. You also happen to qualify for HBO if you go that route.

I'd enjoy playing either one, but I'm voting Half-orc because of the more proactive offensive options.
