Best Post-apocalyptic RPG?

Really, I just heard there were some quality problems, and that the rules were a bit wonky. And from what I had read, I kind of got the idea that it was an Omega World type game... and not a "build your own apocalypse" setting at all.

I can't say that I've found the rules wonky myself, but the implied setting is more of a Fallout/Mad Max/Gamma World type setting.

Ah, yeah. I see. I can deal with those game settings, but I generally like to play around with things a bit. My last post-apoc game was set in the Juan de Fuca strait, just near where I live. Lots of temperate rainforests, and based around exploring the wooded land by boat. With crazy psychics and warped creatures, as well as crazy robots running amok. That sort of setting.

I suppose I could always cannibalize things from Darwin's World, though. Shouldn't be tough.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for a post-apocalyptic RPG? Something with a feel of "The Postman" or "I am Legend" or "The Road"?

I'd like to have a hardcopy of the book(s), if possible. I was looking at Darwin's World, which looks pretty awesome, but most of the stuff is only available in PDF now, which is kind of a pain.

Just thought I'd see if anyone has any other ideas.

Thanks!

The Postman or I am Legend where their is weird stuff out there but people are people sort of settings I'd go with GURPS,D20 modern or M20 and do background setting work. Redline is a good for mad-max with 50 style mutants. Darwin's World is good for mutant hunter style action, the default universe is more messed up then The Postman but adaptable.

After math is a great game but is also overly complex in many areas for no sensible return.

Gamma World in all it's many wonderful (and some bad) versions isn't meant for even a vaguely realistic world. Sure one can pull off dark and grim but it still feel comic bookish or cinematic (not bad at all here just not realisitic).

note on The Postman... get your hands on the original book, it's is good, not as syrupy as the movie and defines the setting even better if you are going to RPG in a similar setting.

Well, no one's mentioned biblical apocalypse. Just in case there's a chance you might be interested in that angle, I'll mention "The End" (both original--long out of print--and d20 versions). I haven't played it in a while (I ran an on-line game of it a few years ago). But I seem to recall you start with HP = Con and get d2 hp per level after that, which seems to automatically keep the tension at a high level.

Our local game shop still has copies of the main book for sale. I think I've even got an extra copy around here somewhere if you're interested.

Ummm... wow.

I got a heck of a lot more info than I expected. Thanks to EVERYONE who helped out. I'm really excited to look into some of these products. Even the ones I don't use should be fun to read.

I'd love to give an overview of the story I plan to run, but I'm sure a few of my players are reading this thread, so I can't really do that without ruining it for them.

Anyway, thanks again. I really appreciate the help!

Oh yeah.. I can't stand the movie, but I absolutely LOVE the book. The setting in the book was more what I was talking about. :)
