Best products from the 4th edition era?

Well, what did you want to use it for? The 4e Dark Sun book was created to allow you to play Dark Sun using 4e rules. It also features some of the best crunch that 4e has to offer, e.g. it was the first book with character themes.

If you are just looking for background material about the setting you are better off getting pdfs of the original 2e setting supplements or reading the Dark Sun novels.

I have many DS pdf's from the 2e era. I wanted something in print form with lots of fluff in it, something more like the 3e FRCS.

Exactly. It seems like DS would have been perfect candidate for a setting book and a players guide if the crunch was that important. I suspect the popularity/economics led it to be one book, unfortunately.

I did pick up Dragon Kings - an spiritual successor by the original author (Tim Brown). I am much happier with that product. The core setting book is systemless and they released crunch for free (Savage Worlds, 13th age, Pathfinder I believe). Much mo' better.

Although I was not into 4e I still wanted to pick up interesting things. Dark Sun was the final straw of ever buying D&D stuff sight unseen. Now I want to see reviews and possible see the product in the store before picking things up (one exception - I did pick up the 5e Starter Set to support the next iteration of D&D - but even then only after they gave an idea of the contents).

I just wanted to say that I ended up buying the Menzoberranzan: City of Intrigue book. I haven't read it all yet but what little I've seen is very good and the artwork and graphic design is top notch as well. I picked this book for two reasons... first, it's edition neutral so no 4E crunch that I'll probably never use and two... I don't have any info on Menzoberranzan in print form so it's way cool to have a book about it on my shelf.

I'm on the fence about getting any further 4E books. Underdark and the planes books all look cool (Open Grave looks ok too) but I'm not sure there is enough fluff in them to make it worth my while. I don't know, I'll probably wait and see how the reviews for Princes of the Apocalypse are in early April before I make a final decision on my next book.
