We never found out which one he chose. :(

Since this thread, of course, a very nice series of systemless Freeport books have come out, making it a great, and ultimately edition-agnostic setting. I think all the rest that he was interested in, other than Eberron, are now OOP.

I'm a huge fan of Iron Kingdoms myself. I probably consider it as my favorite (but unplayed) campaign setting. I did play it once at a con game and had a blast.

I think it's curious how much Freeport, while being a systemless book, still manages to feel more D&D-like than some alternatives. Compare it to Five Fingers, the pirate city book for Iron Kingdoms, and you get the odd situation where the IK book is compatible and meant to be used with D&D, but feels much less like D&D as we mostly all know it than the completely systemless book that in theory can be used with any fantasy roleplaying game at all.

Last time I ran significantly (other than one-shots and mini-campaigns) I used a Freeport and Five Fingers kitbash that was a lot of fun. I go back and forth often on which one has the flavor I like best.

Greyhawk has gotten old for me and my group. I'm interested in that new setting by Ed Greenwood. I think it might have some potential.

If her were asking this now, instead of over six years ago, I'm not sure what I'd recommend. The only "recent" campaign setting that I even know of is Golarion. Maybe I'm just out of the loop.

Well, Midgard by Open Design is new (sorta).

Oathbound is still/newly again in press.

Isn't Zeitgeist part setting as well?

The Great City by 0one games is, I think, new-er.
