Best RPG books any system, any publisher

I'm in the middle of one heck of a no fun move and have been going through some rather old RPG stuff from the early 80's. It got me thinking on what was good and what really wasn't, so I'm curious to hear what you all think are some of the best RPG books, box sets, etc that have been produced since RPGs came out. Don't limit yourself to d20, but don't ignore it either if you think it stands up as the best out there. What sourcebooks have been just killer? What rule books were the most cocrete? What stunk then, but has somehow stood the test of time? What was awesome then, but now is just crap?

HârnMaster game system
HârnWorld game setting

It just doesn't get any better than this for true medieval fantasy gaming (IMO of course).

DarkMatter, WotC, for Alternity. Best rpg book ever.

I like Mutants and Masterminds rules-wise, it's a hellaciously good implementation of d20 rules.

Writing style, White Wolf has some good stuff in their core books, I like Demon and Mage myself. But the bizzaro organization and nigh-useless indexes kick those down a couple notches and make them hard to use in play.

Life on Terra Nova for the Heavy Gear RPG. No matter what rule system you are using, this 95% rule-free book presents a complete sci-fi setting with depth hardly seen anywhere else. When people ask me for a recommendation it's always at the top of my list.

For me, by far...

The Arcanum (Part of the Atlantean Trilogy)

Well, in the 80's I was playing d20 D&D before anyone else :). I can use most of the material right now without conversion. It had MANY of the elements of the d20 that we know today. When I first saw 3rd edition, first thing I thought is that Bard's Game could easily sue WoTC, lol (yes, it's that similar). Anyway... if you can find it, it's a real gem as are the Talislanta books (also from Bard's Games).

For those wanting a review of this system (only one I could find, seems info on it is VERY scarce):

I have to admit, I'm relatively new to RPGs (only 4-5 years, as opposed to some of you who can recall gaming in college. I, on the other hand, am just now gaming in college), but heres some of my choices:

GURPS Discworld- Call me nuts, but I love Terry Pratchett, and this book turned me onto GURPS, which i now use for most of my "gritty" games.

3e Players Handbook- the first time I really bought a core rulebook, and so the first time that I really understood a set of rules. Quite possibly one of the greatest RPGs of all time. the very fact that d20 is the system I use for almost all my games is proof enough of the effect the 3e PHB had on me.

Mutants and Masterminds- Before M&M, I never thought superhero roleplaying could duplicate the comic bok experience. Boy am I glad this book proved me wrong.

Spycraft- This was the first non-fantasy d20 book I ever bought, and it really showed me the possibilities for d20, and it still holds up as an awesome book, even now that there are more d20 books then ever before.

Arcana Unearthed- the only book to recapture my feeling of awe with the 3ePHB. An excelent example proving that you can have more core classes then those in the PHB.

Agree with many on here, lots of fine books being discussed. I have to put a vote in for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This isn't just some crap system they tossed Buffy on top of so fanboys would buy it. They used an excellent system that captures the feel of the show perfectly. The core book provides enough canon information to get you started, while at the same time pointing you in new directions if you want to do something a little different with it. CJ Carella is IMO a brilliant RPG author. I've never read an RPG book before where I'd say that chapters about combat modifiers are interesting, but in Buffy he pulls it off.

Even if you don't watch the show, give the game a chance. It's THAT good. Any relatively modern game, this is the system I'd use. Except for highly tactical military, in which case I'd dig out the GDW system (twilight2k, merc2k, etc.)

Hero System Fifth Edition: The Ultimate Gamer's Toolkit.

One book that allows you to play any genre of rpg gets my vote.

I put my vote in here.

1.)Shadowrun(any edition)
2.)3eDnD
3.)Lejendary Adveture
4.)Rolemaster's Gamemaster Law(Best I ever Read) and Races and Cultures
5.)Paranoia 2nd
6.)Runequest
7.)Ars Magica

Talislanta 4e. All the Tal books are great, but the new edition is just amazingly amazing. All 500 pages of it.

Star Frontiers. Still my favorite SF game.

Tenra Banshou Zero. The art alone makes this book worth owning.
