Hey,

I just stopped @ Phoenix Games in Minneapolis lastnight and they are having clearance sale on ALL THIRD-PARTY d20 books. They are all 50% off.

Some highlights:

Several Conan Books
Several Starship Trooper (minis books too)
M&M 2ed Books
Troll Lord Games Stuff
A lot of Green Ronin products (Black Company & Freeport to mention a couple)
Other Mongoose books.
All of the new Runequest books

Lots of other good stuff.

I probly should have been greedy and just kept it to myself. :]

On some new third party products, too? I wonder if they are looking to close or just scaling back gaming books very heavily?

The store seems to be giving up on D20, with exception of WotC products.

The store owner says that Third-Party stuff just does not sell well enough to warrant the shelf space. I think the non-d20 RPGs are out selling his non-WotC d20 stuff. Plus the store is a heavy minis and boardgame store.

he has something like 8 of those long comic book boxes of d20 sale items left. A lot of it is pretty newly released stuff.

Locally it it seems that more than one store is either dumping third party d20 stuff or greatly reducing what they carry.

it seems that (at least hear in minneapolis) d20 is losing favor with retailers.

He does know the new RuneQuest isn't d20, right?

yeah, he does.

I think he decided to get rid of it along with all other mongoose books. I know that Runequest has not sold much for him. He ordered three copies when it came out and still had 2 on the shelf, no reorder.

I wish my FLGS knew what the concept of a sale was. The only time they discount things is when they have sat on the shelf for 3 years without selling. And even then the price is still generally more expensive than what I could buy it for online. Of course, since there isn't much in the way of competition they can basically charge whatever they want.

This is the first sale of RPG books (particularly d20) that I have seen anywhere locally in years.

That is why it is sort of alarming. :heh:

I wouldn't let it worry you. With that much material as backstock, it sounds like there was some over-ordering that needs being pared back. Add to that the lack of distinction being made between old and new, d20/OGL/non-OGL/non-d20 and it seems more like, perhaps, a slight over-reaction to the realization of that past over-ordering. The top store locally, Games Plus (whose co-owner and ordering guru posts on EN World as thalmin), has always played things much closer to the vest with their ordering but I've seen other stores that get too caught up in trends and wind up getting caught with too much material, and thus having to reduce much stock at low prices. It's a tricky business that takes a great deal of constant research of which products are the top quality of what's available, a perpetual finger on the pulse of of community trends, and a savvy sense of ordering acumen. Not many people have the time and experience to keep the level high in all three categories required.
