I think Superman II was a great sequel. So was The Wrath of Khan and Empire Strikes Back. Toy Story 2 may be one of the best sequels ever.

Other good ones for me include:

X-men II
Aliens
Evil Dead/Army of Darkness
Force 10 from Navaronne (that counts, right?)
Lethal Weapon 2
The Mummy 2

I'm sure there are more, and some are certainly better than others.

Highlander 2. Oh wait. Wrong thread. Nevermind. ;)

As for Predator 2, I liked it a lot, but I still think the first was better. To bad that cult status wasn't enough to get the Predator a couple more movies. :( I SO want to see Aliens Vs. Predator, at least.

Anyway, my personal list. Nothing new, of course, but oh well.

The Two Towers
The Empire Strikes Back
Terminator 2
X2
Aliens

I've always preferred Empire Strikes back to all the other Star Wars movies. For one, the bad guys actually WIN! Nevermind that it doesn't have any Ewoks.

Actually, they don't. Neither side really wins. Vader neglected pursuing the Rebel fleet in favor of spending the entire movie trying to capture Luke and either turn him to the Dark Side or kill him, and he failed at both.

The only guy in the entire movie who actually got what he wanted was Boba Fett.

Best Sequel?

I'll chime in with those who've said Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness.

The Last Crusade - Raiders of the Lost Ark was a tough act to follow.

Silence of the Lambs since earlier was Manhunter, later remade as Red Dragon.

Desperado (El Mariachi was first) so I'm hoping Once Upon a Time in Mexico is even better!

Legend of the Drunken Master aka Drunken Master II

Final Fantasy 3 for SNES. :D

The Farscape movie. You haven't heard about it yet? Sorry, I forgot about traveling into the past and revealing secrets of the future. Well, us Farscape fans can hope can't we?

That's like saying Peter Jackson's FOTR is a sequel to the animated The Hobbit. They're parallel universes, but Silence of the Lambs was not a direct sequel to Manhunter, in a cinematic sense.

I'll cast my vote for Godfather II.

Wrath of Khan does, however, get the award for massive improvement over its predecessor.

Honorable mentions: Empire Strikes Back, Toy Story 2

My point about not considering TT as a sequel is that if they thought they could make money with an 9-hour movie they would have released it as one movie not three. I think movies that were planned from the beginning along with the first movie cannot be considered sequels. Thus series such as Star Wars, The Matrix and Lord of the Rings are not really sequels IMHO. Not to take anything away from any of those great films.
OK. This is a technicality, but no one who's actually read the early scripts can buy Lucas' line about all the movies being planned out ahead of time. He had ideas that had to be dumped when he was writing Star Wars, but the forms they eventually took bear little resemblance to what he had at the time he wrote Star Wars. So, I don't think they really fit your definition.

No comment on the Matrix. And that's an effort for me.

I'm a big fan of Die Hard 3 myself, although I once heard a rumor that it was actually meant to be a Lethal Weapon film.

Speaking of Mel Gibson, I also liked Mad Max 2.
