Best set-up for Undead Basher

Greetings,

I will eventually roll-up an 1/2 orc Barb/Fighter, and I was wondering how to min-max it to better fight undead, considering that the darn things are immune to crits.

What weapons, skills, feats should I get ?

It seems like you are really worried about undead. Is there a specific reason for this? DM been dropping hints?

Unless I'm mistaken, there are a few Prestige Classes that specialize in destroying undead. You may want to look into those in the long run. We use Undead from AEG and Necromancy (from Mongoose?).

I'd also check out Masters of the Wild, to really expand your selection of Feats and Skills. I like this book alot.

In the short term, look into getting your hands on some holy water, and making friends with a cleric or two.

Good luck!

First off, get your hands on a copy of AEG's Undead book. There are plenty of cool PrC's in there for bashing undead. Also, there are two feats that are a Must Have for any aspiring undead hunter. One of these feats is Stout Hearted, which is a prerequesite for the real gem, Death Angel. The Death Angel feat allows crits and sneak attack damage to apply to undead. The only downside is that you need a special kind of holy symbol (described in the book's equipment chapter) for the feat to work.

Beyond that, a really good PrC from the MotW book is Foe Hunter, though you need at least 1 level in Ranger to meet the requirements (Favored Enemy). Foe Hunter grants you a nice Rancor Attack (extra damage dice v. your Hated Enemy) and both DR and SR v. your Hated Enemy.

Also, if your DM is building a campaign with an Undead Hunter type theme, allow me to make some additional recommendations.

1. Once Cleric is Good, Two is Better. Be sure to have at least one cleric in the party specially built for Turning/Destroying Undead. If possible, try to have two clerics with the other being a little more generic or combat oriented.

2. Blunt Weapons are Your Friend. Seriously. I cannot stress this point enough.

3. Don't ignore the Ranged aspect. Most would be inclined to deplore ranged tactics against undead (many being resistant to piercing damage) but with the proper weapons, ranged attacks are the best way of keeping large numbers of undead at bay. Many of an undead's nastiest abilites are based off of touch attacks, so don't let them get too close. Bows/Crossbows with Ghost Touch and Baned against Undead are invaluable.

4. Tactics, Tactis and more Tactics. This goes hand in hand with number 3, but I'll reiterate it here. The best way to fight undead isn't necessarily the "Charge & Slaughter" method. Be sneaky, use fortified positions. Let them come to you and fight on your terms. Use Hallow and Concecrate spells/effects to maximize your advantages. Never give a large group of undead, especially incorporeal undead, a chance to surround you.

OR you could hire a skilled necromancer who has levels in animator (Pr-class in the book Hollowfaust: City of Necromancer) Barring that there's the unfailing. Course you'd have to GET a necromancer to defend...and thus make leaving Hollowfaust (or a variant there of) a little MORE difficult.
