Hi folks, which sourcebook would you consider has the best rules for called shots? The only I have seen so far is in The Quintessential Fighter - are there any others?

Asking where the best called shot rules are.

To me, that's like asking where they serve the best sulfuric acid cocktails.

what's a called shot in this edition?

the best source of course is the only source...2edADnD. they don't have it in the earlier or later editions so much as flavor text.

Lol. Well, let me change the question - what sources have called shot rules? SO far we have Grim & Gritty and Quint Fighter.

As for 2nd ed, those rules were in the Complete Fighter, right?

Actually the DMG has rules on called shots however it's disguised.

Use the rules for attacking objects of varying sizes (-8 for tiny, -16 for diminuitive ... that kind of thing ... numbers may be wrong).

Assign body part sizes based on standard sizing. So a Medium creature's torso would be just smaller than medium (so maybe just -2), the head small, etc etc.

If they successfully hit with the penalty, then they hit with a called shot. Of course you might want to double the penalties otherwise with low minuses all your players will make called shots to the head.

Once they've hit, you can do a variety of things:

1. assign 1 point ability damage based on the area hit (int/wis/dex/con)
2. give them an automatic critical or bonus to the confirmation roll
3. anything else you can think of

Kalamar Players Guide has some rules for called shots... whether they are the best is up to you. You need some feats and can damage certain bodyparts instead of causing a critical... DMG page 27.
