Best system for a Pulp/Indy game?

d20 Cthulhu - Strip out the Mythos (or not) and you've got a lean, mean and cinematic system. I'd start out the characters at 6th level, though as 1st level CoC characters are tissue fragile.

I’d go with either Savage Worlds or True20.

As odd as this may sound, I’ve also found that the Angel RPG from Eden Studios also tends to work well for weird/pulp settings due to the cinematic variation of the usual Eden mechanics, and integration of the drama point system.

D20 Call of Cthulhu is another system that can run pulp pretty well.

Everyone who is pointing you in the direction of Savage World is right. So many SW products are very Indiana Jones-esque.

When you say pulp, there's alot of stuff you could be referring to.

You know, Fate would be good for a pulp game. You can get it at the evil hat website linked to above, I believe.

This is why Spirit of the Century uses FATE as the core system. The book is also released under the Open Gaming License, as is FATE.

The best part about SOTC however is the 40-50 pages worth of amazing DM and player advice, which is helpful for any game, not just a pulp game using FATE. Rob breaks down a lot of helpful concepts into chunks that are easily understood and used, which is drawing a lot of acclaim for the book.

I had heard really good things about Pulp Hero but the Hero System rulebook is intimidating in its sheer size.

Spirit of the Century sounds pretty cool as well. I might have to check that one out.

Thanks for all the suggestions and opinions everyone!

Hardly a surprise, but I'm touting Grim Tales as the end-all and be-all of any game system that uses low-magic and high-grit for its heroes, from Conanesque sword and sorcery, to pulp 1920's action, to Modern-day conspiracy genre, with about everything except high-cinematic action (near-Wuxia-level action, which it doesn't do well).

I will admit that Savage Worlds is also an excellent fit, being designed with similar design goals to GT.

From a player POV Savage Worlds is a great system. Not only is it fast but if you wanted to introduce not so seasoned players to a game it is quick to pick up. And the rule book has stats for many if not all weapons that you would need to use.
