Unearthed Arcana Best use for Cartographer's maps?

Hmmm... anything fun with gaze of two minds and handing a map to familiar?
You could give a map to any summoned creature (or bard), have it walk into a room and blow it up in various colourful ways.


It might be worth pointing out that it's not just the artificer who can use this. Any map holder can use a spell or ability on any other map holder (within normal range).

I'm interested in 2nd paragraph of the 5th level ability:


LEVEL 5: PORTAL JUMP
As a Bonus Action, you teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space you can see.You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of once).You regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

You can also use this ability without expending a use if the destination space is within 5 feet of a creature carrying a map created with your Adventurer’s Atlas. Doing so destroys the map that creature carries.



Does it still has the 60ft range limit or is it with no range limit?
If there is no range limit, is it limited to same plane as most teleport spells?

if there is not range limit, it would be a perfect infiltration tool for "tanks".
Just send character with highest Stealth to sneak into an area and with some long distance communication tool, have entire party "beam" to scouts location.

That's how I read it, a separate ability with unlimited range, at the cost of the map. Note the first feature doesn't have anything to do with maps, just free teleports.

I don't see teleporting 60' to an ally that much different that it would require destroying the map.

So these should probably have 2 different subheadings.

Portal Hop: teleport 60'
Regroup: teleport any distance to an ally, destroy the map

  • Fathomless - Fathomless Plunge
2024 Wizard:
  • Evoker - Sculpt Spells (I guess this is beneficial)
2014 Wizard:
  • School of Evocation - Sculpt Spells (as above)
That is all the class features I can tell on first pass, including things like Eldritch Invocations, Maneuvers, and other sub-options, that at least seem to have a clear benefit equal to or better than spells.
