Better with dip..

My son's running a Dragon Shaman in my Raveloft campaign, and let me tell you, that Energy Aura is a PAIN!!! (Please correct me if I'm doing this wrong) But every time a bad guy hits a party member in mellee he's taking 4 damage, that adds up quick!

Agreed. A player in my group is 3rd level. As soon as I heard he was going to be able to spider climb 24/7 at will with no penalty, I just got pissed. He hasn't even "dipped" and he's a bloody tank. (And I do mean bloody--he wades through enemies like a scythe.)

I find it very difficult to challenge a character like that.

I get the impression that 3.0 was supposed to work like this originally. Have a concept you want to play? Multiclass into it. It's nice to see this, as opposed to an increasing number of PrC's and base classes.

My original hope for 3+ was 4 base classes, Fighter, Rogue, Cleric and Wizard, and everything else was a PrC off of that. Paladin would have a BAB and divine spell prereqs, to make Fighter/Cleric the fastest path to it, and so on. But alas, it was not to be. Alas.

Have you found any other classes whose whole character changes with a dip? Do you like this aspect of 3.5 multi-classing?
I'm a big proponent of 'dipping'. Almost every character concept can be improved with a one-level dip. However, you need to consider carefully what's the best moment for a dip. Taking it too early will often weaken your character.

Eh, Spider Climb at will with no penalty isn't that great. The Warlock in my game does it. It's handy, sure, but it knocks your speed down to 20 feet, takes both hands, and requires you to run errands for the party (who can't usually follow you) annoyingly often.
