Beyond Dungeon!: D&D boardgames and Talisman

My sons, age 8 & 12, both love Talisman. We do normally stop the game when someone grabs the Crown of Command; that takes long enough as it is.

As for the D&D board games, I like Wrath of Ashadarlon the best. However, my kids weren't overly fond of the game, though. I have to say I prefer (original) Descent a whole lot more (haven't played the new Descent), but haven't tried it out with my kids - I suspect they'd love it, though. Also, my kids have played and seem to enjoy Super Dungeon Explore immensely (especially the attacking chests, they think its hilarious - when it doesn't happen to them).

However, I actually think you might be able to get them hooked on Munchin (not the board game version, though - the card game). My kids love that game tremendously.

Talisman is probably easier, mechanics-wise, for your child, but as another poster noted, the game can last a *long* time, which can be a problem for children.
The duration alone needn't be a problem, if you've got a game that can stay engaging through it. Talisman doesn't stay engaging. Heck, it often doesn't even start engaging. I've played it six or seven times because it was what the other people around me happened to be playing, and can honestly say I didn't enjoy a single one of them, with the possible exception of one or two back in junior high when I had no taste. One, I was openly comparing to torture well before it was over. Some of those were enjoyable evenings due to the company involved, but choosing Talisman over any number of other games didn't add to any of them and actively detracted from some.

My next move, I think, will be to get some Paizo double-sided laminated dungeon flip mats, write on each room what "level" it is, and then use the Dungeon cards that match. That'll allow me to continue to indoctrinate the kid on using miniatures in lieu of lame cardboard standees like the 2012 Dungeon comes with until he's old enough for Dagger.
