My sons, age 8 & 12, both love Talisman. We do normally stop the game when someone grabs the Crown of Command; that takes long enough as it is.
As for the D&D board games, I like Wrath of Ashadarlon the best. However, my kids weren't overly fond of the game, though. I have to say I prefer (original) Descent a whole lot more (haven't played the new Descent), but haven't tried it out with my kids - I suspect they'd love it, though. Also, my kids have played and seem to enjoy Super Dungeon Explore immensely (especially the attacking chests, they think its hilarious - when it doesn't happen to them).
However, I actually think you might be able to get them hooked on Munchin (not the board game version, though - the card game). My kids love that game tremendously.
