Beyond the Mountains of Madness (CLOSED but I'll take alts)

That's right, I'm going to attempt to run the mother of all Call of Cthulhu campaigns, which I received just recently from Chaosium, who had old copies on sale on their website for $35 or so (and they sold out quick!).

So -- taking interest for now, and I'll give you character generation specifics later. Needless to say, this is using the Call of Cthulhu d20 rules. If you want to start brainstorming character ideas, fine with me, just keep in mind that you'll need to have some skill that would make you useful to the expedition -- scientists (of various persuasions), engineers, pilots, historians and so on would be useful, while taxi drivers, authors or office workers wouldn't.

Your characters will be part of the Starkweather-Moore Expedition of 1933, which is going to Antarctica as a follow-up to the ill-fated Miskatonic Expedition as described in "At the Mountains of Madness".

Andrew! You are a braver man than I! But I should be talking since I am running Masks of Nyarlathotep!

Oh man I would love to get into this but sadly, I have read the adventure! :(

Anyone who gets into this is in for a treat!

Count me in! I just picked up a copy of the Call of Cthulhu d20 book a few weeks ago and I'm really looking forward to playing. I've read a bit of Lovecraft, as well as most of the d20 rulebook, and have 7 years of roleplaying experience, most of it in D&D 2e and 3e/3.5.

willing to play the historian, if that works.

Is it a better idea to have read the story Beyond the Mountains of Madness, or would you like the mystery preserved if possible?

Awesome. I have refrained from reading this adventure for years. Aside from having a bend for character creation that is leaning heavily towards John Carpenter's "The Thing", I'm a babe in the woods for this plotline. That being said, a pilot/explorer/dog handler is probably the direction I'll be going for (sorry, I'll let someone else play Wilfred Brimley  ). So count me in, if I may!

Cool! I've been a fan of Lovecraft fiction for years, and the CoC game almost as long!

We've been running a BRP tabletop "Masks of Nyarlathotep" campaign on and off for the last year. (I think BTMOM, Horror on the Orient Express, and MoN are the three best modules ever published for CoC.)

We splurged and bought BTMOM when it came out for our Keeper, but alas, that never materialized. That said, I'd be interested in playing this (I assume this will be a PBP or PBEM type-thing, right?), although I confess I'm not familiar with the CoC D20 rules.

I kinda like the idea of playing a female character with some sort of measurable scientific skills, especially given the chauvinism of the era.

It's assumed in the scenario that some of the events of the novel are public knowledge -- most, actually, except for the nitty-gritty Cthulhu bits. IE the public knows that the expedition found revolutionary fossils, nothing about the elder things or shoggoths. Or TEKELI-LI...

No one gets possessed by any weird critters and gets the urge to build a UFO in the woodshed... ;)

Although, come to think of it, isn't The Thing really a shoggoth?

Believe it or not, of all the PbPs I've ever run, this would be only the second female character ever. What branch of science, any thoughts?

Oh, and anybody who doesn't have prior experience with COC d20, don't let that stop you. I'll help you along with character creation.

Cool.
I was thinking maybe an Archaologist? Or maybe a paleo-botanist? WOuld either of these be acceptable? Or did you have somehting else in mind?
