BG2 Performance

I've recently restarted BG2, and everything was peachy at first on my 2.8 GHz, 1 GB, ATI 9600XT, WinXP SP2 PC. It should, the minimum specs are about a tenth that. Everything cranked to the max, and using 3D acceleration.

Suddenly, when I hit Athkatla, things start stuttering. Mouse movement gets jerky, party movement as well. Nearly unplayable. Even in the character menus. It goes away when I pause.

Funny thing is, it seems to be less or more severe depending on the area. For example, the worst was in the beholder lair under the Temple District, but in the Temple District itself it was very slight.

I've read about a bazillion (a lot!) posts, ranging from tweaking the video settings, going to 2D, disable this, enable that, etc., with no positive result.

Also, I noticed that BG2Main eats all my CPU! Something is very wrong...

Anyone see this problem or have any ideas?

BG 2 is an older game. You might want to try running it in compatiablty mode so it thinks you have Win 98 or something. Also, make sure you have all the patches.

Oh yeah, it's old. I'm going through areas I don't even remember! It's great! :)

I've got the latest patches from Bioware, and I've got Throne of Bhaal as well. What do you mean by "compatible mode"? A setting in XP or BG2?

Ah, I found the setting in the "Properties" menu of the shortcut. Toying with it now, but it doesn't look promising...

Yay! Fixed!

It had nothing to do with compatibility, drivers, etc. My CPU was at 99%, and this hinted at scripts running.

I had been using a mod with bottomless Bags of Holding, and I had about three items with a quantity of 9999. Clearing them out of my inventory (by putting them on the ground) cleared things up immediately.

Smooth as silk!

Cheat the cheater because he cheats! Like the nerfity nerf chant around here... :)

Besides, my character is a hero, not a logistics expert that manages inventory all the time... :D

Win XP has a thing called compatablty mode. It tricks programs to think that you are running an older version of Widows. I think you right click on the desktop icon for the program, go into properites and the compataibly mode settings should be there.

If you're playing solo, it's not cheating - it's a house rule.
