No, actually, never heard of them. I never liked Basic, always played AD&D back then. But you could well be right. I think such a deep cut into D&D lore would appeal to the folk at WotC. And it looks like they are going for the "you are all fairies, y'all" approach for the new adventure, so there would be room to establish them within the context of the adventure.
