That explains one thing - playing a monk.
If the character suits you, that's fine, but monks have a reputation for being weak and poorly-designed. (It's an accurate reputation.)
There's a player in my group who just started 4th Edition (he had previously played 2nd Edition) and kept getting confused by his attack bonus, as he didn't know how weapon proficiencies worked in 4e and the weapon on his character sheet - made in the Character Builder by the DM - wasn't in the Player's Handbook (which he does own). I figured this might have been a similar situation, which is why I tried to detail all the math.
