Bizarro World Crafting System?

Don't flame if this has already been discussed to death. I haven't seen it.

A player wanted to have a masterwork silvered mithral greatsword crafted. I went to look up the rules on how long crafting takes and here's the formula:

To determine how much time and money it takes to make an item, follow these steps.

1. Find the item’s price. Put the price in silver pieces (1 gp = 10 sp).
2. Find the DC from the table below.
3. Pay one-third of the item’s price for the cost of raw materials.
4. Make an appropriate Craft check representing one week’s work. If the check succeeds, multiply your check result by the DC. If the result × the DC equals the price of the item in sp, then you have completed the item. (If the result × the DC equals double or triple the price of the item in silver pieces, then you’ve completed the task in one-half or one-third of the time. Other multiples of the DC reduce the time in the same manner.) If the result × the DC doesn’t equal the price, then it represents the progress you’ve made this week. Record the result and make a new Craft check for the next week. Each week, you make more progress until your total reaches the price of the item in silver pieces.

Anyone notice what's screwy here? In step 4 you multiply your check by the DC. That means that because a 50gp exotic weapon is more difficult to craft, it gets finished sooner than a 50gp martial weapon? Granted, in practice exotic weapons are typically more expensive than martial weapons, and thus wind up taking longer to build using this system, but that is not always the case. Greatswords and falchions, for instance, are pricier than some exotics.

I'd just have the NPC Master Swordsmith tell the PC to come back in a week, and come up with a price. Given the paramaters of my world, the price would be pretty high for the item you're talking about. Say, 1000 gp.

Me too, the price charts in the core rules are one of the first things that I forget, and I don't really care to look them back up again either.

Actually, this can make sense.

If it is harder to make, then less people would be able to make it.

An item that an apprentice could make in 10 days would not need to be more expensive than an item that could be made by in 5 days, but only by a master.

who is the Master?

Sure nuff. ;)

yeah, a master can make an item faster than a non master. that just makes sense.

practice or repetitiveness makes the work go faster. ;)

Just as an aside, I don't think a weapon can be made of two special materials. It cannot be both silver and mithral.

If, on the other hand, by 'silvered' he meant coated in silver, that's perfectly possible.
