Bizarro World Crafting System?

If, on the other hand, by 'silvered' he meant coated in silver, that's perfectly possible.

Me too, the price charts in the core rules are one of the first things that I forget, and I don't really care to look them back up again either.

I may have to do that myself in this case. Even a plain old longsword can take a week to bang out using this formula.

yeah, a master can make an item faster than a non master. that just makes sense. practice or repetitiveness makes the work go faster. ;)

Now let me ask you, did you actually read the formula I posted above? I ask this because the bizarroness that I pointed out doesn't have to do with a master crafting an item faster than a non-master. That's sensible.

But the way that formula works, a master can craft a complex item faster than a simple item, if their costs are the same. That is not sensible.

Btw, now that you guys've had your fun, can you can the hi-jacking of this thread?

Where's a moderator when you need one.

I was rather appalled when I wanted to get custom fullplate for my fighter and realized that according to the rules it'd take like 7 months to make (we had 6 months of downtime). I might be off by a few months, but mastersmiths needing the better part of a year to make a suit of armor struck me as just not right.

Though for all I know, that's actually accurate.

The fact the same smith can make a more difficult item at a faster pace is pretty screwy, though. I don't think we messed around much with craft skills, in the games I've been in.

Incidentally, why would anyone ever make a suit of fullplate that wasn't masterwork?

I agree, it's not sensible. Making expensive jewelry would take years in some cases. It does not take that long to make a gold ring if you have a mold ready. The crafting guidelines are just that guidelines. I have yet to see anyone come up with a more commonsense forumla though.

Anyone notice what's screwy here? In step 4 you multiply your check by the DC. That means that because a 50gp exotic weapon is more difficult to craft, it gets finished sooner than a 50gp martial weapon? Granted, in practice exotic weapons are typically more expensive than martial weapons, and thus wind up taking longer to build using this system, but that is not always the case. Greatswords and falchions, for instance, are pricier than some exotics.

This is pointed out in The Enchiridion of Treasures and Objects d'Art (a PDF written by The Sigil that's available at RPGNow.com). The EoTaOdA provides some alternate formulas (based on the type of item) that make a bit more sense, but are a bit more complex. I haven't made use of them since I haven't DM'ed since buying it, but I will once I do start DMing again (especially since he included a spreadsheet that does most of the work for you).
