Despite its versatility, the quarterstaff is not often found in the hands of skilled warriors, and is usually relegated to serving mages and sorcerers as a backup weapon. The knight of staves, however, has mastered this simple and effective weapon. With his trusty staff he can dispatch foes with a fusillade of lightning-quick strikes, crush them with mighty two-handed blows, or deflect their weapons with elaborate, spinning parries.

The knight of staves is a noble wanderer, an unassuming warrior armed only with a humble staff. He travels the land with only a few meager belongings, aiding those in need, and bringing justice and retribution to the wicked.

The entry requirements are a +5 BAB and two feats, so a wizard or sorcerer could take the class at 11th level. Although the class has no spell progression, so it would be a suboptimal choice at best.

Depends on what the flavor is and your version of optimal..It would probably get boring for my groups if I always depended upon the best choice rather then what fit the flavor of the setting.

Sorry, I wasn't trying dictate to you the best choice for your character or NPC, I just wanted to let you know that the class isn't designed for spellcasters. I didn't want you to get the wrong impression about the class, possibly buy it, and then be unsatisfied with your purchase.

The theme of the class is an ascetic, wandering warrior or paladin. Sort of like a more lawful robin hood. The class could actually be a nice choice for a martially minded druid, especially since shillelagh works on quarterstaves.
