If New Line are smart (and they haven't shown themselves to be so far), they'll take on a director who will imitate Jackson's style, cinematography and art direction (though perhaps lighter, as you put it). It would likely turn out badly if they allowed their new director to make his mark on The Hobbit (and the Silmarilion?). Movie-goers like continuity and Jackson has already fixed the look of Tolkien's world in many people's minds.

Lol. Seriously, LoTR was not a bad film(s), but the character assasination of Faramir and several other additions and changes just ruined the experience for me. I didn't mind omissions - unlike a lot of purists, I do not regret the omission of Tom Bombadil. Treebeard having to be tricked into stomping Sarumun's ass was just stupid, though.

I'd like to see a hobbit film, and there's really less for Jackson to screw up in the Hobbit, but I'll never forgive him for raping LotR.

Or maybe those were decisions he made in order to make the novel more watchable for the cinema. Like many have said before, a movie is totally different medium from a book. And like it or not, there will be changes.

Now I'll admit that some of the changes did bother me. Faramir for one, as was the Mirror of Galadriel scene. But overall he retained the heart of the story, and that is nothing short of miraculous.

You can think whatever you want, but Jackson did not "rape" the text as you so claim.

I really liked the LotR movies. I don't think PJ is such a genius that he cannot be replaced, however, and think there is every reason to believe the studios would make a good enjoyable film. That's my hope, anyways.

I don't see anyone as being such a bad guy here. I'm betting NL really has a time limit, and needs to have these films made already before it's too late. It really has disagreements with PJ over accounting practices. Instead of solving their differences by compromising, like all buisnessmen would do as its more profitable to all sides, Jackson insists on dragging things in court seeking a final Just resolution. NL doesn't want to give up on the money it thinks its due and capitulate to his ultimatum, and PJ doesn't want to give up on the money he thinks he's due and capitulate to NL's ultimatum. NL has no choice but to move forward without PJ, and PJ has no choice but to move forward with other projects.

I remember how the original studio for LOTR demanded it be made as one film. And they said, according to Jackson, that Moria could just be skipped. It could be mentioned as a nasty experience by the characters. And that, said the studio, would take care of that.
Jackson said No. And although he messed over the characters of Faramir and Treebeard, among others, he did other things right.

Take the first mentality above and put in The Hobbit, and you'll get something like:

We don't need that meeting between Bilbo and Gollum. Bilbo can just find the ring lying in the grass in the Shire. And that will take care of that.
