You're still right though, fans might not flock to non-Jackson movie, but the big bucks come from non-dedicated fans.

Well, I don't know what the "practices" are that are in dispute, but if we accept Jackson wants arbitration and New Line doesn't, then we can assume that arbitration would be bad for New Line. That aside though, if we accept what Jackson says about them offering to settle if he agrees to Hobbit, then I think it's also a safe bet that New Line is not so sure of the deal Jackson WANTS for Hobbit.

I mean, if Jackson wants a bigger cut of Hobbit, so he's holding out, and New Line is also having to give (er, MGM? the other company) a cut, plus they can't even get the project started for years and years... well, maybe they are better served finding someone else to do it. I think the Hobbit is different enough that it shouldn't really "match" the feel of LotR (though I imagine the prequel should), so a different director might be a good idea.

Especially since I don't think that the cast should be automatically be the same, though it would be nice. Going non-Jackson does free their hand a little.

Might be a good business (albeit not creative) idea in the minds and eyes of the studio suits, but it does not sit right with me, period.

This is about as bad a business move as WotC putting Rokugan in James Wyatt's Oriental Adventures book (sorry it never gets old with me).
