blessing of orcus shadowfell keep (spoiler?)

My dm is runing us through H1 campaign. We are currently deep into the shadowfell keep. We ran into a lvl 5 orcus underpriest and his minions.

The Dm was having a hard time interperting "blessing of orcus" which gives of a aura 10 "death attack" How it looked was that any of his minions that died within 10 spaces of the underpriest, gave him a basic ranged attack. This would be ok but he was only armed with a mace.

We noticed his minions were carrying throwing axes. Was this supposed to be written better as anyone in his aura could make a "death attack" or only him?? If it was him what was he supposed to do? Throw his mace?

I'm not sure I should be answering this for a player, but:

The Underpriest has an aura that allows any of his allies with 10 - when they are reduced to 0 hps - to make a melee basic attack or ranged basic attack. The Underpriest doesn't make the (melee or ranged) basic attack -- the dropped ally does.

If the ally has only a melee basic attack (like the minions), then they cannot make a ranged basic attack. They aonly have claws, so this makes sense. The berserkers also do not have a ranged basic attack -- but they *do* have a ranged attack At-Will, so as a DM, I'd allow them to make a ranged basic attack if appropriate.

ya thanks alot. I used to Dm and so I try to help him out whenever I can. The encounter is over and he just decided to not use the ability due to the confusion. He and I were just wondering how to interpret it. If he ever runs into it again he will know now. Thanks again.
