[Bluffside] Jarman The Wise

Correct me if I'm wrong here, like I misread or skipped a chapter or something, but Jarman was a sorceror. The Towers reaction to him showed that the tower didn't really like sorcerors all that much. But why did then did the Wizards District develop such a huge bias against sorcerors if it was also Jarman The Wise who explored the valley, met the Sixans, and founded Bluffside? Is there no hero-worship? If they had any respect towards Jarman they would've found the Obsidian Tower a more insidious thing then just a warning that Sorcerors are bad people.

I didn't find any references about how the populace felt towards Jarman so I'm not sure what they thought of him - he's our great founder ... but also a dirty, dirty sorceror. Love / Hate? Also, what happens when the population (inevitably) find Jarman?

Thanks AT--

I will get Jim G the "man behind Bluffie" to answer this I have sent this thread to him so he is aware. Be patient, answer coming soon!

Thanks for the quick response. I can wait, though, since Jarman isn't going anywhere. In the meantime I'll just idly think of ways I can seamlessly introduce psionic characters to Bluffie.

join the Bluffside Yahoo group for the Netbook of Bluffside (on front page of ENWorld) people joining include a lot of the creators of Bluffside and fans with new people and places.

No worries AT

I think they half answer the question AT. Whilst Jarman was undoubtedly a 'hero', for organising the development of Bluffisde, he didn't have limitless resources to proffer for all the work that needed doing. Being as that the Obsidian Tower was such a no-no to him, and looked less likely to offer up insights than the Palace, he directed efforts towards opening up the Palace.

Meanwhile the Wizards have a definite feeling that the Obsidian Tower is a genuinely powerful source of magic and magical learning (that's the part we don't really have explained, other than one encounter with the Tower - perhaps there's more that we don't know as public history). They resent Jarman's direction in this matter, on top of which he also wants to investigate the site as an archaeologist, not merely as a source of magical power. So the Wizards take matters into their own hands and start independently investigating the Obsidian Tower. I imagine that that would cause some rancour between Jarman and their leaders. In time, the rift becomes permanent, and with Jarman's disappearance there is never a chance to heal this rift.

And so we get to the modern day, where the Wizard's Quarter treats itself as being de facto independent of the guidance of the city, and with an ingrained mistrust of sorcerers. Jarman's legacy to the Wizards is one of obstruction (probably worsened by the fact that despite decades of work the Obsidian Tower still hasn't yielded it secrets).

This sounds really cool; I may have to pick up a copy of Bluffside for my group. I checked RPGNow, but didn't see it anywhere; perhaps it is a print product.

I'll see what else I can find out in the Yahoo group. Cheers.

You can buy it here at ENWorld, at any local gaming store or at our site store, click here.

Either way it is a great resource for a city, actually a whole city setting in a city, and more supplements and adventures to follow.

And again add new stuff or ask question on the Bluffside yahoo group started by fans and has the creators as members!

Leopold had a similar question at GenCon. Our answer was that the wizards don't really have a prejudice towards Sorcerers, per se. The thing is, the tower repels them, so Sorcerers don't come near the wizard's district. Sorcerers likely resent wizards for this, and the feeling, in turn, becomes mutual.

It's not like wizards actively hunt down sorcerers, but they just never associate with each other since sorcerers can't come near where the wizards live and work.
