Bo9S: Question re Adaptive Style -in- combat

Mistah J

First Post
So, the Adaptive Style feat in the Tome of Battle lets a swordsage switch out his readied maneuvers as a full-round action rather than taking five minutes.

This means he can do so in the midst of combat (provided he is willing to spend the full round action of course) and so if he does, are any expended maneuvers still expended if he switches them? Are the new readied actions all renewed?

Does it say anywhere what happens? I couldn't find any reference but I could have skipped over it. I'm inclined to believe that in such a case, any maneuver traded with an expended one is expended itself for the duration of that combat but that's just me.

Anyone got some clarification?

This is a matter of some debate. The current official CustServ answer is that all expended maneuvers are renewed when a Swordsage uses Adaptive Style. Many, like me, question this. It would seem to be vastly more powerful than was intended, and raises the question of why a feat that lets you exchange maneuvers is instead refreshing a maneuver you just used.

In any game I ran, Adaptive Style allows a Swordsage to exchange readied and unexpended maneuvers for unreadied maneuvers. Other DMs may differ.

I believe it is an unintended side effect of allowing one to Ready maneuvers mid-combat. Because it is very clear per the RAW in ToB that when you Ready maneuvers they become available for immediate use.

Using a martial adept's recovery method to get back expended maneuvers is DIFFERENT than Readying maneuvers and having them available for immediate use. They have the same end result, but they are two different "mechanics".
