Boccob's Book

Ok, help me out a little here please. After reading the entry on Boccob's Blessed Book on pg. 211 of DMG I am a little confused. It says it freely accepts spells scribed upon them, and any such book can contain up to 45 spells of any level. So, one advantage is you could put 45- 9th level spells in it which would be much greater than a regular spell book. (I think it would take something like 810 normal pages to fit that many spells into). But my real question is: does this mean that the Wizard putting the spells into the book doesn't have to pay the GP cost of scribing them into the book? I think it does since it says "freely accepts" but not sure how to view this. Thanks for the help!

So for 380 xp, 4,750 gp, 10 days of work and with the craft wondrous item feat and the secret page spell your wizard will never need to have a normal spell book again. I love BBB! :D

Even if your DM rules that you have to pay 100 gp to scribe a spell (it's worded loose enough that it really is a DM call), it still is much cheaper than a normal spell book. Assuming that you fill it up with 3rd level spells, you are saving 17,750 gp... all for 380 xp! Heck, even 1st level spells you are only out of pocket by 250 gp. :)

BBB allows you to write any spell on a single page, and because spellscribing cost is per page, you need only pay for the one.
That is if you consider 'freely' to be flavor text (as I do).

:)

Hmmmm....one person says it's "free" to scribe to the pages once the book is created and another says you must still pay 100 gp per page but since it's only 1 page per spell, it's only 100 gp per spell no matter what level it is. So which is correct? I can see the 100 gp per page since it's still quite a cost savings for the wizard but the "freely" still gets me. Any more help?

According to both Monte Cook (the guy who wrote the DMG, and the magic items section of it in particular) and Skip Williams, it's free as in "no charge to add a spell". It just takes time.
