OK, I'm probably gonna end up kicking myself for bringing this up.
Valar had a full color preview of their forthcoming Book of Erotic Fantasy available for ten bucks. I looked at it, but did not buy it.

In fact, I only looked at the pictures. I couldn't get past them. To me they weren't erotic but repulsive. I have no idea what the content of the book was, because the pictures made my flesh crawl, so I quickly put the book back down. Honestly, I can't see this book being successful for them. I'm sure there is a market, but I'm guessing it isn't very big.

Mind you, the booth was busy every time I went past, but I think that was mostly from guys oggling the chainmail bikini booth babes, who's tops were so revealing that you could...almost...see everything.

Hey, Buttercup! Their sales went up 2% just because of your post! But really, that's the kind of book this is...the controversy will drive the sales. I'm willing to bet that the preview sold out, and that the book will do well too. One man's trash, eh?

I'm kind of on the fence about this product. I would only buy it for the titillation factor. Nothing I've seen screams "must have" to me. But even if that's the only reason anyone buys it, I think it will still do well initially. I doubt they will print a huge run, so they'll make their money.

I doubt anything on display was pornographic.

It's legal to let minors see things with blood and guts and "strong sexual themes" though, as long as you don't cross the line into porn.

To echo kenjib: what exactly were they displaying? If they could show it at gencon you can probably describe it here without eric's grandma getting too upset.

Gencon is very specific as to what you can display and what you can't display. However, I do support the right to publish gaming material of this nature but that doesn't mean I'm going to buy it.

Believe me, I don't need a book to define erotic situations into game mechanics nor would I really want to in the first place.

I think waaaay too many people are going to want to look at this but not buy it. I hate that kind of product as a retailer. :(

Well, as for myself, I'll want to look at it and then decide whether to buy it.

I'm a gaming slut, though, so odds are I'll end up with it if I think I can get some use out of it.

Then again, I've had a lot of weird erotic elements in my games over the years- from the dark ritual that turned three pcs undead (that involved sacrifices and sex with a centaur) to the undead female conjurer whose lover liked her to 'play dead' with him.

From the chat with AV, some of the rules would be interesting, but I won't be purchasing the book. Now if they release a PDF sans artwork/photos, I would probably purchase that. It's just not the sort of thing I want on my shelf.

YMMV

Kirowin. This is freaky but I go to Penn State (last year this year) so i'll be at state college. My name is also Nick too! Anyways if you were interested in perhaps joining for gaming sometime you can email me at nxm205@psu.edu. I'll be starting a gaming group with old people and some new this coming fall and hopefully trying to join another so that I can also be a player. I've never seen someone else use ENworld from PSU before. I will probably send a GAPS email.
