Book of Erotic Fantasy previewed at GenCon

The earlier preview reminded me more of a Sergio Leone western than Playboy. Dusty, grimy, sweaty, and not quite right - like how all the extras are clearly Italian, but are supposed to be Mexicans, Americans, etc.

Somewhere I saw a description that stated the the art wasn't just not-suitable for minors because of erotic content but also because of violent themes.

Yeah, that's really the problem. Violence juxtaposed with nudity and in some cases hints of necrophilia. The images were quite disturbing, at least to me. Not something I want to support with my hard earned dollars. Heck, I wouldn't even want it for free.

I picked up the preview copy and rather enjoyed it. I thought it was well done.

The Fallen Cherub looked a bit gruesome (some cuts and blood), and the Pleasure Golem looked as a flesh golem would likely look, and Vershnat (a goblin goddess of sexuality based on the Black Goat with 1,000 Young) was ugly as sin, but none of them were disgusting IMHO.

The other pictures were quite beautiful. My favorite, a girl touching herself, was fully clothed, but rather sensual.

Of course, I thought the picture of Lidda "savoring the rewards" on page 145 of Player's Handbook (page 167 of the 3.5 revision Player's Handbook) was on the erotic side. Her left hand is certainly in an interesting position. Savoring indeed!

I eagerly await my copy of the preview (I wasn't able to go to GenCon so someone picked one up for me).

Based on what I've seen of the previews of both text and images at the Valar web site (http://www.valarproject.com) it should be highly enjoyable.

I know that even Anthony Valterra himself said that the image of the goblin goddess was disturbing...but I think that's the point. I'm sure that what goblins find erotic is not what you or I would find erotic.

Why would someone pay $10 for an advertisement for a book? Oh well, sex sells I suppose but it sounds pretty dumb to me. From the description I've now heard, the book certainly doesn't sound like it will be as tame as Gwendolyn Kestrel tried to make it sound during the post-spin damage control. Either that or Mr. Valterra decided to continue with his admitted shock/troll advertising campaign after all.

I think my Dad put it best when we were discussing the topic of violence vs. sexuality in media content.

His statement is paraphrased as..."Think about how wrong this is, you can show some half-human abomination cutting off a woman's breast with a chain saw...but you can't show a man kissing a woman's breast because that's too graphic."

*shudder*

We have some strange rules and ideals as a society in regards to what is "graphic".

People are dumb. The book, from the website and buttercup's impression seem rather trashy and useless in any normal rpg. Just as well hit the 'glossy' section of the local magazine rack.

I checked out the book at their booth- I didn't find it repulsive, per se, but I definitely didn't like the book. The pictures (mostly fetish pics- lots of piercings, nudity, semi-S&M stuff) were so distracting (and not in a good way) that I didn't even look at the written material. Flipped through it in about five seconds, put it down, and walked away...

I felt like I got value for my $10. It had usable prestige classes, feats, spells, and monsters. And one of the authors autographed it for me.

Considering I live in a world where people spend hundreds of dollars a month buying cigarrettes (something put into the mouth and then set on fire), I at least got something I can use repeatedly for my $10.

Anytime you buy a T-Shirt or a hat with a logo for a company on it, you are paying them to allow you to advertise for them. You are buying their advertisement. Is this any different?

Dumb or not, I am pleased with my purchase.
