Book of the Righteous Dethroned!

I, for one, would never say that other voices are not allowed to be heard.

That being said, BotR is one of the few D20 products that I can say I never regretted purchasing.

My current campaign (finally started, yeah!) is using AU as a base, thus you would think that there is little from BotR that would apply, yet several of the PrCs made my "cut" (we only have allowed 20 PrCs in the whole world and five of them are from BotR). Some of the spells have been converted over. And while the gods themselves do not fit into the current game world, there is one Quickling faen determined to call upon each of them along with their servitors ;)

Just to show that even in a world that would not normally fit the BotR mold that it is still possible to find uses for it.

OTOH, I have read the review and think that while it does not fit my own take on the book, it is intelligently written and well reasoned. I bow to you, CRGreathouse, for being willing to take on what I know was a daunting task.

After hearing all the raves about it, I flipped through it at a LGS.

First reaction was, "hey, I heard it was supposed to help you build a cosmology, not to give you one." I looked some more, and replaced it on the shelf.

Slightly off topic...

I for one always read the worst reiews I can find for a given product, not the best. I figure if the worst thing someone has to say about something doesn't dissuade me from a purchase, I'm golden.

Works for me.

All I can say is that two years later, I haven't used a single class, prestige class, item, backstory, spell, or monster from the BotR.

Either have I. Icame close to using some of it, but it just never happened. Still, I look forward to the day when I do use it and it has become one of the most popular "bathroom reads" for my group ;)

I have no problem with the negative review myself.

I'm always glad to see a review go into the database. It helps expand the overall knowledge of a product and what some may consider "blah" others may find golden.

While being "negative", the review is handled well; and the author points out his valid concerns with the product. I appreciate a harsh review now and again. Its nice that lots of people love a product, but a voice in the crowd that is willing to say what could be better is always a good thing in my opinion. (I often look for Psion's reviews because he tends to judge things more critically than I do, so I know I'll get an honest look at the product.)

Hmmm. I scanned in the holy warrior and updated it to 3.5 and put it in my house rules.

I always had a problem with the paladin being the singular holy warrior and used the variants that came out in Dragon 105 or so. The Holy Warrior was like a godsend to me.

Not to mention that for me, BotR was everything that the DDG failed to be. It was something that you could use in a game that wasn't about going toe to toe with the gods. It gave you plotlines, structure, and personality.

There is nothing wrong with the occasional bad review as long as they are honestly meant and clearly explained. What I find kind of annoying now, is the pattern of going back and getting 3-4 year old products, which are not as slick as new products, and reviewing them by current standards. In some cases they are not even still on shelves.

It is like reviewing Jaws this week and saying the shark looks cheesy.

Hell, I've watched Jaws many times and find that it's still a great movie. I guess my mind glosses over how 'real' the shark looks.

And I loved the BoTR so much, that two short little stories I did are or were (haven't checked in a while) up on their Tree of Knowledge with little expansions for people.

Would it help if I wrote the review 9 months ago?
