You're lucky. You apparently purchased a pregnant Relics & Rituals. If you put the book larva (or "thin cardboard", as you so naively called it) into a shoebox lined with old rags and keep it in a warm, dry place, you should have a healthy copy of Relics & Rituals 2 in about a month and a half. Congratulations!

Also my first copy of 1E Oriental Adventures started falling apart about 2-3 years after I bought it.

As did mine, and it saw only minor use.

All my 3e books are still together. I suspect there must have been a bad batch out there as so many complain about theres whilst others of us have had nary a problem.
