Books With "Tear-Out" Maps

Scribble

First Post
I just got a new campaign book, and inside the map for the world is a tear out map...

Ugh... Everything I consider tearing it out, I just kind of look at it and twitch a little... I just can't do it!

This is something I HATE about hardback books as campaign books. I just can't pull the maps out of them. It hurts too much! :P

Does anyone else out there share this problem? Please say I'm not alone and there are others I can turn to to commiserate with.

Yes, I have the same problem. Not just that I feel like I am "defacing" the book, but I've had issues with actually tearing the map or losing it.

Give me back my boxed sets, dammit!

Let me put it as gently as I may: You're a freak. ;)

I tear 'em out and have them laminated. Otherwise the often end up torn and frayed anyway and I can't use them if they're still in the book. Then again, I don't expect or try to keep my game books to remain in pristine condition. I haul 'em, toss 'em across the table at times, leave 'em in the bathroom to read or whatever. I like when they get a little worn because I then feel like I'm getting my use out of them.

This is true for all of us.

But, for me, this is the reason why I don't like tearing out maps from books -- potential damage to the map during extraction, or loss of the map during storage*.

* The second issue is actually less of a factor for stuff like battle mats for adventures because for adventures it's just for an encounter or two with that module. For pull-out maps, it's often a world or area map for a setting that you'll be needing/wanting for as long as you play in that setting (and playing in a setting is a lot longer timeframe than playing a specific adventure).

But ... where's the problem? You do buy two copies of each book, don't you? One for actual use and tearing out anything you need and the other one to be placed on the Altar of D&D, to be worshiped but never to be touched. Because, if you don't do this, you're certainly a freak. ;)

Sigh...

I know. :(

Dude... Then I'd have TWO books I wouldn't be able to bring myself to tear the map out of! :(

You've ever had a book printed in early XX/end of XIX c.? They commonly used those big sheets of paper that were folded several times, and only then cut. So sometimes you'd end up with one that had uncut pages.

I know a librarian that for years disallowed cutting books with this defect. Which would be totally cool if not for the fact that some of those are the only remaining copies in the city... Still, I doubt anyone brought this up for several decades now. The trick is to hang on for first 15 years.
