Books With "Tear-Out" Maps

Yes, I have the same problem. Not just that I feel like I am "defacing" the book, but I've had issues with actually tearing the map or losing it.

A map that is never detached from its book is no less lost than one which is used and then damaged or misplaced. More so, in fact - at least the latter one got used once.

I tear 'em out. Very carefully, though, and sometimes with the help of a box cutter or the like, for those where the perforation is more of a suggestion.

I have the same problem. In fact, the only book I have with a tear-out map that is actually torn out is a used copy of the first Star Wars Saga Edition book that (amazingly) still had the map folded up in between the endpaper and the back cover.

I never use that map, either.

While I cringe at doing it, I tend to tear the map out at some point. I tend to keep my books and am not much into collector value, but I fear most losing the map since it is now detached from the book.

Well, my 4E DMG still has the mini maps at the back, untorn out

But then again, I have never needed them.

I will pull out the map from the 4E book and will laminate it, and hopefully get it printed on cloth (though I have no idea how I could do that).

I really want a new cloth Dark Sun map!!!!

One solution, that costs money, is to buy the PDF if one is available. Then print out the maps or take them to a print shop (if you can find one willing to print from PDF.)

I hate tear out maps too. I prefer most adventure maps to be printed on the inside of the cardstock module cover (the proper way) and any additional maps printed in the main booklet. If a large map is needed and a boxed set isn't possible then a folded poster map in a nice pocket like the one done for the 1E Lankhmar City of Adventure is the way to go.

Tear outs with no place to store them safely within the product are evil.

That's the legal way of doing it.


I like getting soft copies of the maps and blowing them up to scale I like and printing them off.
Makes it easier to make notes on them, as well if you blow them up enough it can be to scale of a mini's map. Done that with a few module maps, makes for great prep work as you don't have to take time to draw out new areas.
