Boomerang

Superior One-Handed Ranged Weapon

Boomerang
Prof.: +2
Damage: 1d3
Range: 15/30
Price: 1gp
Weight: 1/2lb.
Group: Light Blade
Properties: Light Thrown, Returning

Returning: On a missed attack roll, a proficient user can make the thrown weapon return to the original square it was thrown from, at the end of their turn. If the user has a hand free, they may catch the weapon as a free action.

Who do you see using this item with 1d3 damage?

I would call it a sub-par choice for just about every character. With the low damage, it would only really appeal to a Rogue (imho, since they can add extra damage when they have combat advantage) and Rogue would have to spend a feat (which they wouldn't need to do for either Shuriken or Hand Crossbow) - and I don't see this as being a whole feat better than either.

(In other words, I'd see the range in exchange for the lower damage as a fair trade-off if it didn't also require a feat to gain the proficiency bonus).

I'd suggest that if you leave it as is, you make it not be a superior weapon or, if you make it a superior weapon, I'd go back to 1d6 for the damage (even then, it is barely superior to a handcrossbow).

Like I said before, I wasn't sure if to make it a military or superior weapon. I took a closer look at the classes and feats to determine if the boomerang should be military or superior and I'm now convinced that it should be military.

As a couple of other options you could have:

Rogues and Wizards from a certain region of the world replace Shuriken and quarterstaff with boomerang and even replace that rouges weapon talent ability of increasing the damage die with a Shuriken with increasing the damage die with a boomerang.

Or just add Boomerang to the Rouges and Wizards starting weapon proficiencies, I highly doubt that it would break the game.

So here is yet another (and hopfully last) update to the boomerang;
