BoVD has already achieved its purpose

Everyone, the thread isn't here to discuss the morality of "vile darkness" in games. Rather I'm getting a little fed up with the hype the book has generated. I'm willing to bet, this is just what Wizards wants. Let's face it, controversy sells. Remember Mortal Kombat and Night Trap. Those video games became best sellers after congress complained about them. In the same way, Wizards is hyping BoVD to generate controversy to increase its sales. (After all, D&D sold best in the 80's when it was viewed as a tool of the Devil.) Everyone knows that several people have spoken out against the book before its release, including a well known former D&D author. What could possibly be better marketing? Monte assured us that prostitution and rape wouldn't be mentioned in the book, but Wizards catalogue mentions that it will discuss such issues and talks about creating "intense campaigns". Either Wizards edited the final manuscript to include such things, or more likely they simply wrote the description in the catalogue to generate controvery, regardless of the actual contents of the book. Dragon 300 is another way of shamelessly hyping the book. The sealed section was a surefire way of giving the impression of a sneak peak of some of the "vile content" that will appear in the BoVD (Even though Monte didn't write the sealed section.)

Ya, it's all pretty silly. People are complaining about a product that is not out yet based on their own thoughts on what this product will have in it. With any luck the hype will generate more sells, though.

This product has been very hyped indeed, although on these boards at least it was getting twice the hype before the title was announced, back when it was just Monte's secret project.

Obviously it's more hype than anything else.

Months ago before the thing was even officially announced it was mentioned as, "Monte's secret project," which naturally brought about lots of speculation (on this site alone). I can remember huge threads begging for hints and guessing what it was based on the ones that we got. They've been very tight-lipped with just what is inside this book all along, which naturally makes people curious about just what they'll find in it.

My prediction is the book will be decent, but it certainly won't live up to all the hype surrounding it.

Tangent alert! Estlor, that color is nearly impossible to read on the dark background. You probably either need to bold your text, or pick a different color. You can try limegreen although any color named in html can be used. You can also use #rbg codes in the vB code to get whatever custom color you want, although implementing it every post can be tiresome.

Then again, maybe you just won't post 1500 messages like I have...

EDIT: On the other hand, I love having the custom font...

Good Book or Bad book, I'm not worried about.

Its the Save or Die roll (for good people) that I'm concerned about :D

Beware! All of the Evil ones shall gain a free level soon!;)

It probably will generate some sales, but I'm suprised that this is the first book to warrant such protests. There are already a few books that have evil things detailed in them (remember EVIL?), this one is "special" somehow.

We'll see how its sales go soon enough.
