[BOVD] Mindrape spell

nameless

First Post
This is one of my favorite spells out of the book. Instead of bothering with interrogation and extended lie detection magic, a Mindrape caster just forces his way into the brain, grabs the info he wants, and then moves on.

It also allows complete and instantaneous reconstruction of the victim's memories and behavior. The caster can leave the victim insane (as the spell Insanity), or not. I'd like know what extent it is viable to change the victim's attitude.

It would seem fair to me that the caster could make the victim regard him as a friend, and possibly have his allies regard him as an enemy. I'd compare that to Charm if I had to ad-hoc it.

Can the caster restructure the victim's mind in such a way as to have an utter thrall (Dominate level of submission)? Logically, I say yes, but balance-wise I say no. If yes, should there be some kind of skill check?

I would say you could change the target's attitude to any NPC attitude (possibly including the Fanatical one in the ELH) but could not replicate any other spell's effects. Your actions would affect the targets attitude normally but initially the target would be very devoted and loyal. That is my take on the spell. Also I forget can you change the character alignment with the spell?

That spell (Mindrape) reminded me of a trilogy written by Issac Asimov back in the 1950's. It's called "Foundation", there is a character (the "Mule" I think he was called) introduced in the middle of the second book "Foundation and Empire" with an ability exactly like Mindrape...

Pick it up. I guarantee, you will enjoy it.

Yeah, you can choose the new alignment. Alignment change can be reversed by a break enchantment, but the memory alteration can only be fixed by a wish or miracle, since the spell is instantaneous.

I agree on the ability to pick an attitude, but I guess the important question becomes, whether or not Fanatical is an option.

As a 9th level spell, it is probably in line to make a target fight to the death for you. Perhaps a Bluff check is in order to see if the target "accepts" the veracity of his new memories. Higher check means more influence over target's attitude (a la Diplomacy).
