BoVD spell component price list

Is this right? It seems to me that dragon parts and feind parts would cost much more. Then again they are rather innocuous looking, and that might explain the price.

What really surprises me is how cheap a soul is.

A staple of fantasy is how someone can "sell their soul" to receive favors from the powers of evil. Usually these services are on the order of magic item, feat, or high level spell.

But souls are far too cheap to be worth that amount of trouble.

Actually looking at the list I would suspect that the souls there are already traded. That is they are already currency. The deal that goes down when the outsider bargains is not included in that price. Still I am going to look at monte's boards and see if he has an explanation of the table.

Anyone notice the cost of dragon hearts in BoVD?

Has anyone else noticed (and perhaps reacted with disbelief) over the cost of dragon hearts mentioned in The Book of Vile Darkness's section on optional components for evil spells? 15gp? Seems to me like the markup on such an item would be a tad higher, anyone have any insight on this, official or otherwise?

Then again, most of the components seem underpriced. A human soul goes for a couple hundred gold pieces? Man, who's the numbskull devil out there cutting faustian deals? What, they don't have eBay in hell? :)

Ya, the prices aare rediculusly low, or someone is oversupplying them and it's a buyer's market. Maybe it's the blood war, the demons flooded the market to ruin the devils economy. :D

Heh. I just flashed on the image of some old farmer in his 70's herding dragons with a pitchfork.

"Now c'mon Mabel. Into the slaughterhouse you get."

Are souls really in that short a supply? Dragon hearts too for that matter?

If you're willing to accept infinite primes on infinite worlds, the extended mutliverse and hordes of adventurer's running back and forth across the world with magic blazing from their fingertips, I figure the prices are exactly right.

I don't see the dragon's heart as being the entire heart for starters, more a small fragment of a preserves heart. While killing a great wyrm may not happen every day, there's probably enough adventurers on enough worlds to keep the supply up.

And any demon, devil or deamon that looks at the constant influx of dead souls roaming his plane and doesn't think of something interesting to do with it is really just letting the side down.

I don't have the book - are you sure that the price is for a whole heart from a mature dragon? I can imaginethe price being low if it's a small sample of a heart from a much younger dragon. There are dragons for all CRs, these days. It'd be pretty easy for high level NPCs to go out and hunt small dragons for parts.
