Boxed Campaign Settings

I really dislike boxed sets. The extras that come with it (maps, markers, etc.) are things that won't see much use in my games. I would love it if they sold the books by themselves at a reduced price. But my preferences aren't going to stop me from getting Shadowfell and Gardmore Abbey!

I think this feeling right here is exactly why they do sell them as boxed sets. You're going to buy the product anyway even if it has stuff you don't want. And they're counting on folks in your situation to make the same decision.

It's no different from having to buy the entire Martial Power book, even though you only wanted the fighter and rogue powers. Sure, WotC could have released each class's splat info individually for a reduced price... but that just means more hassle for them to print, ship and promote it, all for less money coming in. For them... it comes down to what is the right amount of stuff that most people will want and will be willing to pay for... and how much can they charge for it.
