As the title says, what type do YOU prefer.

Personally, I'm leaning slightly towards hardcover. While I cherish my Al-Qadim boxed sets (to this day, best production value for a boxed set across a campaign line), their a pain in the rear to actually store.

Worse, I lost a couple of pieces from the Boxed set and now I'm debating whether or not I should ebay it

(Come on Al-qadim in 2011!!!!)

So with that said, I'm a Hardcover man.

OD&D(1974) is the only true game. All the other editions are just poor imitations of the real thing. :D

diaglo "came in a box" Ooi

Only real RPGs come in boxes (J/K :D )

Hardcovers last longer, but I just love tearing into a box for all of the goodies, plus having a box is great for keeping loose papers and such all together for the game.

For me, it doesn't really matter if it comes in a box or hardcover, so long as it has minimal impact on the environment. I think the added benefit of me switching to PDFs is that I'm no longer buying dead trees. While I do like to hold dead trees in my hand (Pathfinder is one of them), overall, I do find myself switching to the PDF path.

I never cared for box sets. When I bought them, I would put pieces in a special container, and keep the books with my other game books, and throw the box away. To many fiddly bits. Just give me a book.

It depends on what's most appropriate.

I like big maps and handouts, so I lean towards boxed sets for anything where that might be important. I'm thinking all the way back to the 1e Forgotten Realms here, with its 4 excellent maps and transparent overlay.

For everything else, I prefer hardcovers. This includes stuff where the box set is basically just an excuse for more fluff... If I don't need anything more than a single map, give me a hardcover. They're much more durable than boxes.

Hard covers all the way. They're easier to store, easier to transport, not as easy to accidentally crush, sturdier over time (especially versus the soft-cover booklets inside), and I'm less likely to lose components.
