"Brain-Splodey Amoeba" Minion Trick

Had a great success with this trick yesterday, so I figured I'd let the rest of you guys know.

Quick background: 6 character, 5th level party. Ridiculous damage output. Dragonborn Sorcerer, Deva Avenger, Eladrin Swordmage who moonlights as a striker, Human Invoker who sets up everybody else to hit with obscene regularity, Human Warlord who specializes in making everybody else awesome, and a Dwarven Ardent who is suspiciously striker-like. These characters aren't min-maxed as much as many others I've seen, but they do their character schticks VERY well. They aren't afraid of much. Or at least, they weren't till yesterday.

We're playing a Far Realm-themed adventure (3.0's Speaker In Dreams, rethemed and converted) and they faced down the BBEG in his lair. Various aberrations and tentacular goodness was had by all.

So here's the trick: Dual-use minions. The PCs had fought a kind of aberration minion in a previous fight that, upon death, exploded close burst 1 for 4 psychic damage. As soon as this power was discovered, the PCs got some respect for the flock of flying gelatinous amoebas VERY quickly.

In the last fight yesterday, the PCs fought one Elite Controller, a couple of artillery, a pair of carrion crawlers... and a whole mess of human minions flavored as cultists. The cultists fairly threw themselves at the PCs in suicidal frenzy, which seemed strange to the PCs. The human minions went very high in the initiative order.

Down near the bottom of the initiative order, there was one initiative listed on the roster that had no name next to it. This is because when the human minions died, one of the "brain-splodey amoebas" spawned from the corpse of the dead human minion! This had the effect of putting a bunch of baddies smack in the middle of the PCs well thought out plan.

While I wouldnt do this kind of thing often, the BBEG they are facing is brilliant and has faced the PCs before, so he knows their capabilities somewhat. He's going to have a lot more sneaky tricks up his sleeve... and most of the tricks have tentacles.
