Have you read the Player's Handbook? It's pretty good about walking you through the process of character creation.

You could make a decent 2nd level ranger archery specialist by taking the feats Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot along with Rapid Shot as his 2nd level ranger bonus feat. Give him a high Dex and he'd make a decent complement to your 2nd level fighter.

Rangers don't get an animal companion until 4th level so you don't need to worry about that. Though I guess he could just have a pet of some kind.
