Dude, the average ape weighs in at about twice the average human or deer. Even apes don't live in trees (they will build nests in trees in the lower branches but that's about it). Chimps who do live in trees weigh about 75 lbs which is less than half of what humans and deer weigh.
Orangutans weigh upwards of 200 pounds and they are classified under 'arboreal apes' as they tend to live in trees.

As for the mechanics -- brachiation is the mechanic and it's not fluff. You want the deer to either have hooves of glue or the kung-fu leaping ability.

"" Look up in the tree, it's Superdeer. Just watch out for the deer scat falling from trees at dusk! "
#1. There is at least one species of deer that does hop about in trees. They are small, but they do it.

#2. This is a new species that is made for doing this kind of thing.

#3. This is D&D...

Hopping about on fallen trees or hopping about in treetops? If that's true, then point the way. I'd love to see something on these.

Not the way you have described them. If you persist in digging in your heels, sticking your fingers in your ears and singing, "la, la, la, I'm not listening to you" then by all means do so. I'm not going to stop you. I pointed out a potential problem and offered suggestions. But I'm not going to agree with you on this.

<<#3. This is D&D...>>

Of course it's D&D. I just didn't think it was GOOD D&D and I know you can do better.

As an afterthought, I've decided to go ahead and make the following change-- giving the deer Lightening Reflexes and exchanging Hide skill for Climb skill.

There was no point in adding to its Jump skill as it already had a feat for that (good choice by the way).
